Bleak Day at Emerald for Villains
Cold and wet conditions greeted the Villains when they travelled to Emerald on Sunday for their first away game of the season.
As the 'green and gold" took to the field they were greeted by an opening shower of rain that continued off an on for most of the match.
The wet conditions meant for a slip-sliding affair with goals hard to come by. The opening quarter was a tight tussle with Emerald kicking the only goal with the Villains troubling the goal umpire with just 4 single waves of the flag.
More winter showers in the second quarter saw the mud wresting continue. The Villains limited Emerald to just one major score while Leigh Fisher and Brian Heard brought a little sunshine to the Villains with a goal each. At the half time break just 8 points separated the teams and the only dead certainty was that the rain would continue.
The coaches address at the main break clearly had an effect as both teams kicked more goals in the third term than they had in the 1st half. As the boys sucked their oranges at 3/4 time the scores read Emerald 7/7/49 Villains 5/9/39.
Just 10 points adrift at the bounce of the final quarter it was anybody's game. The Villains rose to the occasion and with just 10 minutes to go and with the only "super goal" of the day, Marysville narrowed the gap to just one point.
But that was as close as the Villains came as a couple of late goals to Emerald saw them edge ahead to hold a 13 point lead as the final siren sounded.
The final scores Emerald 10/8/68 defeated Marysville 1 (SG) 6/10/55.
